Galaxy Toobin' LP - Out May 30th!

On May 30th the Galaxy Toobin' Gang LP will finally leave the pressing plant!

The album has been lovingly described as:

"The cold and beautiful synths of Galaxy Toobin’ Gang (out on Creme Organization soon) are transmitted through the same feeric wave-spaces as those of Laurie Spiegel, Terry Riley or Tangerine Dream and convey perfectly the sensation of simultaneous wonder and alienation that the members of the Peabody expedition must have felt when flying between the abnormally regular shapes of a monstrous mountain range hidden deep into the heart of a eternal screaming whiteness"

Sounds pretty intriguing don't it? Maybe the group (consisting of Speculator & Elliot Lip) can shed some light on it:

Vice: How would you describe your working relationship?
William Burnett: Eliot comes up with the dope melodies and I come up with the mood and kind of take the structure out of the verse-chorus-verse style that Eliot normally works in.

Who do you think is going to be into your tracks?
I have no idea. Hopefully everyone, but prolly just people who like Tangerine Dream, Selected Ambient Works, Jarre and stuff like that. And prolly the blog kids because we have been on some famous blogs already. But of course they ain’t gonna buy the record.

How healthy would you say the scene is for this kind of music?
I really don’t know what scene it is. It has all of the elements of dance music, but it isn’t dance. But I think people will like it—it is different. To me, it seems timeless and I think that is a good thing. You can’t really tell if it is modern or from the 70s, so it has that going for it. So far everyone has been really positive, so hopefully they aren’t lying.

What’s toobin’ to you?
Toobin’ is floating down a river in the inside of a car tyre on a warm day and usually you have a spare tube with a cooler full of supplies. One person parks their car way down river and everyone piles in and drives up and hops in and floats on down. This is a big thing in Texas in the summer.

Incoming

....which is why I feel that with blogs the poor reader is forced to try to follow the story from some point somewhere in the middle and left to catch up. To make matters worse I've been invited to contribute here when this narrative has started some time ago as well.

The one thing to do -I suppose- is to give a brief intro of where one is at the moment. I finished working on my joystick-based "Tr8or" sequencer, a terrible name but it starts with "tr", the core system is based on having 8 steps and it goes round like a traitor, even if it's proving suspiciously reliable. I'm rapidly coming to grips with it as a system for improvising all of the music of a live set on the spot. Not being able to save any patterns is meant to make it impossible for myself to keep "nerding around" too much. This works. I'm also trying to convince myself it forces audiences to listen well as they'll likely never hear the same music again. In the next weeks I plan to start using it as a studio instrument as well which will mean finishing the track in one evening.

In case anybody is interested; it's written in the ChucK programing language but I don't believe that should matter to a audience; while playing I never think about this myself.

I'm also working on a joypad based intrument to play in a band, playing together with other musicians seems like the next logical step in improvised music for me and MIDI-clock can be such a mood killer (and I suck at proper keyboards).

I wish I had more time to practice at Livecoding and Ikaruga. I wish looking for ambiguous situations didn't make me wonder what I'm doing where I am at the moment so often. I wish I didn't have to feel I am being vain assuming anybody is interested in such writing.

I also wish you a good day.
Kas.

Chansons and Herb Alpert

Some ultra swinging video interviews with acid death rock overlords Orange Sunshine. Besides the usual Guy Tavares ramblings, surprisingly Mehdi Rouchiche - aka the Bearded Cock Rocket aka Godspill - steps out of the shadows and unveils some of the bands mysteries. A rare occasion. And oh yeah, it has something to do with some font and some quiz in which fabulous prizes can be won, but I cant be arsed to write about that. Anyhoot, see fo yo damn self.

Rock with Fakir!!

Rock Band, one of the biggest games that has ever been imagined (Wired), will be released this summer in Europe. The game is about performing legendary rocksongs in front of a screen. As official rock-type, the typeface Fakir was chosen.

For this occasion Underware asked rock legend Orange Sunshine to dedicate their next vinyl release to the typeface Fakir. Inspired by the typeface, the band members composed two new numbers which will be released (and sold in record stores) this summer.

Underware invites designers & rockers to design the sleeve. From all contributions an international jury will select one design, which will be the official vinyl release.

Please send us your designs as jpegs in 600 px by 600 px* - front and back
Deadline: 15 May 2008 (one contribution per studio, band or designer).
Please send you design to: rockwithfakir@underware.nl

Free font
For this competition Underware designed a special rock-version of Fakir. You can download it here. You don’t have to use this typeface for the competition, you may also make your own type.

Design specifications
Basically all is possible. Somewhere you should mention the bandname (Orange Sunshine) and the name of the single (Fakir). The sleeve will be a 7-inch (17.78 cm). Please design back & front.

Prizes
01 Your own single + fonts worth 2000 euro!
02 Fonts worth 500 euro.
03 Fonts worth 150 euro.

Appalachian Scenic Trial synth jam-athon for CBS radiostation

One hour exclusive live performance on synthesizer by Smackos for the CBS radio station, transmitted 24 april 2008. Get it here in mp3

O.R So does it have a name?
s:"Hmmm whatabout Appalachian Scenic Trial? Or maybe something like that..."

O.R That sounds nice, What is it?
s: "just some noodling, pad layering and Jan Hammer-ish 70s arpeggio workouts....it pretty much doesn't go anywhere but yeah you gotta do something sometimes"

O.R. That is not what I really ment, I mean what is the Appalachian Mountain Trial?
s:"Ah yes, the Appalachian mountains are a large mountainous range in the east of the US, full with forests, swamps...lots of wilderniss stuff. It stretches from New England to the southern states...uh well you can look it up on the internet if you want to know more"

O.R what synthesizers were used?
s: "That clavia thing G2x modular...an old Yamaha TG33 and my new EMU PK6 synthesizer, that one is really good it does most of the stuff in this piece...it can even do duck sounds in a pond...hmmm and that Beethoven-esque riff was done on the JX3P sequencer"

O.R Sometimes we hear some mysterious vocals about a haunted mansion near a small seaside village and a lonely caretaker...am I correct?
s: "Like always mysterious coastal villages are one of my main themes"

Ok that sounds great, thank you
"Yes. Bye"
